DATING A CO-WORKER
· In our professional lives, we spend many hours in the workplace.
· Thus, it is natural to get attracted to somebody at work.
· However, you need to be a bit smart when dating in the office.
1. Don’t fiddle with company policy
· While some companies, like BPOs, may overlook dating on the premises as long as the employees don’t get too comfortable, others approach this issue with a lot of circumspection.
· If you are not working in a couple-friendly office, don’t indulge in something that can be considered as couple-centric activities related to the physical chemistry between both of you.
· You can flirt, smile and crack jokes, but nothing that suggests intimacy or romance.
2. Don’t date within your working circle
· Avoid dating someone within your intrinsic circle at the office.
· The physical proximity will distract you and will make it harder to conceal your dating footprints.
· Try to date a co-worker from another department, another floor, or at least, someone who is seated far away from you.
· Dating somebody seated within a kissing distance from you might be looked upon with contempt by your seniors, and can also lead to accusations of siding with a colleague.
3. Always play it safe
· Irrespective of your supportive colleagues and bosses, ensure that you keep it discrete.
· Otherwise, you should be in a position to announce it with an engagement or marriage plan.
· If not, ensure that your office romance isn't a topic of discussion during the office breaks.
· Understand that an office romance can be worked against your work or professional integrity.
· Disclosing your office romance is equal to providing a character assassination tool to your workplace enemies for their use.
4. Keep it decent
· Never be too expressive about your feelings for a co-worker anywhere within or near the office.
· Any public display of affection (PDA) is treated as distasteful and can compromise your reputation, and even raise questions about your morality.
· While you may message and email, but holding hands, being seated conspicuously close or hugging each other and giving her a congratulatory kiss, are not recommended.
5. Don’t start an affair just after ending one
· Women form quick opinions about men who have been dumped or those who have had relationships with their friends and colleagues.
· If you have recently dated and broken it off with somebody in a department or the other office floor, try to give it some cooling time before you start to explore in the same region.
· This can save you the humiliation of being turned down or finding a date that has many preconceived wrong notions about you.
6. Office romances beg honesty
· You shouldn’t try cross-dating or multi-dating in the office.
· Before you start dating a co-worker, come clean about whom you had dated before, and what is your current status with her.
7. Have an understanding with her
· Make it clear that, in awkward situations, you would distance yourself from her within the office.
· Make her understand that this precaution will ensure that your career doesn’t get jeopardized.
