GET RID OF A FAIR SKIN OBSESSION
Fairness is an unhealthy benchmark for beauty, particularly in
the case of women, and needs to be discouraged.
1. I want to be fair!
· This unhealthy fetish is most commonly seen in
adolescent girls, who obsess about their appearance when they begin to get attention
from the opposite sex.
2. Facts about skin colour
· First, our skin derives its colour from the cells in
the dermis and epidermis layers of the skin.
· Second, blood vessels provide a red or blue tint
depending on the level of oxygen.
· Third and the most important factor is the pigment
called melanin.
· This colour-giving pigment plays a crucial role in
protecting the skin from harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun.
· Greater the melanin content, darker the skin
tone.
· The level of melanin in the skin is genetically
determined.
3. Not fair? Then it can be
traumatic!
· This fetish for fairness can cause tremendous mental
trauma.
· It may result in sibling rivalry as the darker sibling
believes that the fairer one has it easy, which leads to anger, jealousy and
hatred.
· Parents’ behaviour also contributes to this belief, as
many tend to be biased towards the ‘fairer’ child consciously or unconsciously.
· If it’s not the parents, extended family or friends
could play the comparison game, giving a complex.
· The psychological effects of this obsession are low levels of confidence and self-esteem, difficulty in making friends and socialising, and generally taking
a back seat in life’s activities.
· One is likely to be less motivated to achieve anything in life.
· Keeping on trying out various fairness products may
also make you feel completely drained.
· Many women who are not fair live in constant fear of rejection, and become self-critical, blaming their colour
for things that go wrong.
