NEGOTIATING THE POLITICAL JUNGLE AT WORK

NEGOTIATING THE POLITICAL JUNGLE AT WORK

1. Lion king
·         This colleague is fiercely protective about his turf.
·         Avoid challenging his superiority or encroaching on his domain unless you wish to take on the lion.
·         He is also loyal, large-hearted and successful, and thus, an excellent ally to have in the political jungle.

2. Wily fox
·         This co-worker is the ultimate survivor.
·         A scavenger and an opportunistic predator, the fox looks for short-term gains and targets the easiest victims.
·         To be safe, don’t share your secrets, document interactions and increase the price of conflict.

3. Offensive skunk
·         An employee who has resigned or is perceived to be the cause of a major problem at work is often treated like the malodorous skunk.
·         Other animals stay away because the smell is offensive and sticks on contact.
·         Keep your distance if your image is vulnerable.

4.    Elephant matriarch
·         Irreplaceable long-term employees with no political competition are often like elephants.
·         They fraternise with a clique of similar people, have no known predators, have long memories and are dangerous if provoked.
·         You have nothing to worry about unless you take them on, in which case you’ll be trampled.

5. Sociable monkey
·         The non-aggressive monkey exists in large numbers and has a strong network of social bonds and friends.
·         You can recognise him when he gladly does a favour for you.

·         Learn to reciprocate and you shall have access to the monkey’s extensive network.

DIFFERENT TASTES OF FOOD

DIFFERENT TASTES OF FOOD

·         There are 6 primary tastes of food – neutral, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent.
·         These tastes affect your metabolism differently.

1. Neutral taste
·         This taste increases tissue development, body fluids, fat, bone and nerve tissue.
·         It supports immunity and growth including reproduction.
·         It gives emotional satisfaction, vigour and strength.
·         Taken in excess, it causes obesity, accumulation of toxins, diabetes, obstructions in the body’s channels (atherosclerosis), gas, indigestion, dyspnea, cough, cold, vomiting, loss of appetite and lethargy.

2. Sour (acidic) taste
·         This taste stimulates digestion and builds body tissues like the natural taste.
·         However, it has little action on growth and none on reproduction.
·         It helps the senses to function, promotes strength and causes secretions of fluids in the body.
·         Taken in excess, it causes acidity in the small intestine, burning, itching, premature aging and light-headedness.

3. Salty taste
·         This taste promotes digestion, lessens accumulation of toxins and tissues, increases saliva, and has a mild laxative effect.
·         Taken in excess, it causes inflammation, skin diseases, impotence, premature aging and water retention.

4. Pungent (spicy) taste
·         This taste dispels gas and induces sweating.
·         It heats the body and cleans the blood and skin.
·         Taken in excess, it causes pain, emaciation, burning sensations, fever, thirst, skin diseases and diminishing of reproductive fluids.

5. Bitter taste
·         This taste is the best blood purifier and cleaner of toxins.
·         It has the effect to reduce tissues and fluids and relieves burning in the body.
·         Taken in excess, it causes coldness in the body, nervous disorders, stiffness, colic pain, headaches and reduction of reproductive fluids.

6. Astringent taste
·         This taste constricts tissues and channels in the body, which help to maintain muscle tissue and tone.
·         It heals the mucus membranes and the skin.
·         Taken in excess, it causes dryness of the body, constipation, cramps, emaciation, thirst, nervous disorders and decreased reproductive fluids.

PARTY-PERFECT MAKEUP CARE TIPS

PARTY-PERFECT MAKEUP CARE TIPS

·         Primers help to even out your skin tone, making your foundation glide on.

·         There are certain primers that also have light-reflecting particles, which give a soft, pretty glow.

·         High definition (HD) foundation hides almost everything, and is used by actresses and news anchors.

·         Concealer should be closer to your skin colour.

·         Blush & Blonzer (B&B) should both be applied.

·         Firstly, apply bronzer on cheek bones and on the outer edges of your face.

·         Next apply blush only on the apples of your cheeks to look well-rounded.

·         Apply a shiny coloured gloss for photos often taken during parties.

·
For gorgeous, wide-open eyes in photos, apply beige or taupe shadow to lids (use matte, as glitter looks greasy).

·         Apply three coats of mascara for instant doe eyes.

·         Put on false lashes, that will look like naturally long lashes in pictures (but not in a close-up shot).

·         Crème bases can be cakey in photos and stick concealers can give an unattractive matte effect.

·         So, prepare face with a light reflecting-based foundation formula that bounces light off any imperfections, giving a soft, pretty glow.

HEALTHY HABITS FOR CITY MEN

HEALTHY HABITS FOR CITY MEN

1. Get to know your body
·         Most men pay less attention to their bodies’ signals of health changes.
·         It is important to pay attention to your skin, particularly of any changes in size, shape or colour of moles, by self-checks.
·         In this way you will become more aware of the state of your wellbeing.

2. Try a holistic exercise class
·         For most men, exercises are focused on improving body shape.
·         Try adding a gentler holistic exercise such as Pilates, yoga or tai chi which help in improving posture, increasing energy levels, boosting flexibility, strength and stamina, improving concentration and reducing stress levels.

3. Get checked up
·         It is essential that you act on any possible symptoms by visiting your doctor about any concerns you may have.
·         However, many men ignore their symptoms, due to fear or denial.
·         Instead of risking your health, pay a visit to your doctor, no matter how small you think the risk may be.

4. Let yourself be vulnerable
·         Many men are afraid of appearing vulnerable by opening up to others and showing how they really feel.
·         Sharing your troubles will help you gain support and bond with others.
·         Crying can also help your body to release stress.
·         So, let your tears flow next time you are feeling emotional, whether due to a bad day or a weepy movie.

5. Do more cardio
·         Many men centre their workouts on weight lifting and building up muscle, ignoring aerobic exercises essential for heart health.
·         Try swapping the occasional weight lifting session for a cardio workout to help improve your health and physique.

6. Indulge in some pampering
·         Most men are hesitant to go for good grooming.
·         A proper skin care (which includes using an SPF) is important for your health, including looking after your nails to prevent fungal infections.
·         If you want, a massage can also benefit with reduced back pain, detoxification and an increased sense of well-being.

REDUCING EXAM STRESS OF CHILDREN

REDUCING EXAM STRESS OF CHILDREN

·         When examinations are around the corner, stress, sleepless nights, panic and confusion accompany them.
·         Here are simple steps to help your children through this period.

1. Reaffirm your love
·         Children do not really dread exams.
·         What scares them is that they may hurt their loved ones by not measuring up to their expectations.
·         Tell your children that if they have given their best efforts, then whatever the result, you will face it and continue to love them.

2. Don’t follow ‘expert advices’ blindly
·         During exam time, there is a flood of expert advice on how students should sit, eat, sleep, relax, study and carry on with life.
·         Parents may follow dictums of such ‘experts’ blindly.
·         This takes away spontaneous space from around children.
·         Advise them on a healthy lifestyle, but give them freedom to decide how to follow it.

3. Encourage and highlight their strengths
·         Your children have their virtues and strong points, which we take for granted.
·         Instead, we highlight their negatives in an attempt to improve them.
·         This backfires and shatters a child’s self-confidence.
·         This can make them anxious, angry and think of themselves as under-achievers.
·         Encourage and highlight their strengths to fill them with confidence.

4. Promote initiative
·         Don’t force targets, goals and study plans on your children.
·         Instead, give them freedom to chalk out their own initiatives.
·         This helps them be in control and positive.
·         They are then able to pursue their studies peacefully.

5. Open communication
·         There will be differences of opinion between you and the children on goals, time invested in study and their daily routine.
·         Discuss these issues openly, and explain what you feel.
·         Then, understand their viewpoint and work out a mutually acceptable plan.

6. Make them comfortable with competition
·         In our culture, we often emphasise cooperation and empathy.
·         As a result, students may feel scared of competing.
·         Unconsciously, they feel that by competing, they are being aggressive.
·         Therefore, they experience panic and guilt.
·         Tell your ward that competing in a healthy manner is also a virtue.

7. Seek help from experts where essential
·         Parents may experience shame, or live in denial, if things go out of control as they find it difficult to see their children in pain.
·         If you encounter extreme behavioural changes, consult a psychologist.
·         There are some children who feel extremely anxious, depressed and suicidal.
·         An expert’s help can prevent their progression towards a crisis situation.

RIGHT HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES

RIGHT HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES

1. Prefer a cool morning shower over a hot bath
·         Unless you have a specific skin ailment like eczema, there is no evidence to support that hot water and additives in soaps dehydrate the skin.
·         Dermatologists say that cool showers are more refreshing in the morning.
·         Leave a hot, soapy bath for the evening, as the drop in body temperature thereafter tells your body it’s time for sleep.

2. Use ice bag for injury instead of a hot pad
·         The most effective initial treatment for soft tissue injuries is the RICER regimen: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and Referral for medical treatment.
·         Apply ice, if possible, in a plastic bag and dab with a damp towel.
·         Do this in 20-minute periods every 2 hours, for the first 48-72 hours.
·         The elderly, children and those with circulatory problems may be sensitive to the cold.

3. Munch a chewing gum instead of mint
·         Mints can cause extensive decay, usually around the gum margins where it is difficult to fix.
·         If you want to freshen up your breath, it’s better to use mouthwash or chew a sugar-free gum.

4. Prefer an electric toothbrush over a manual one
·         Electric toothbrushes with rotating, oscillating heads have been proven to remove 17% more plaque than manual brushes.
·         However, whatever brush you choose to use, your brushing technique is what’s important.
·         Circular motion to cover the surface of your teeth is better than side-to-side strokes.

5. Power walking scores over running
·         Power walking ticks all the boxes.
·         Although running burns around 30% more calories, most people can’t run as far as they can walk.
·         It is also high impact, and you can’t run within a few hours of eating, but can go on a power walk.
·         Walking as fast as you can while pumping your arms is not only a great cardiovascular exercise, it doesn’t require as much energy either.

6. Calm down instead of yelling
·         Count to 10, is the advice of psychiatrists.
·         It is always better to calm down, reflect on why you’re angry and think about how you can resolve the issue.
·         If you blow your top, the person you are angry at will become defensive and you won’t solve anything.
·         But you must take resolute remedial action, because burying your anger is bad for your health too.

7. Eat green olives instead of black ones
·         Green olives haven’t ripened fully so they contain roughly half the fat than ripened black olives.

8. Prefer floss over mouthwash for plaque
·         Cleaning between teeth with floss removes the sticky plaque that tooth brushing alone cannot reach.
·         While mouthwashes can be helpful to disguise bad breath, they have limited dental health benefits.
·         So, go buy some floss thread now.

9. Do exercises in the morning instead of evening
·         Studies show that people who do morning exercises are far more likely to stick with it.
·         You’re also more likely to have a healthier day – from the food choices you make to how you feel mentally because of the endorphins flowing throughout your body.
·         While exercise helps you sleep better, working out too late in the evening will actually disrupt your sleep.
·         It is better to go for a relaxed, late evening walk, instead.

10. Go for a tape measure instead of a weighing scale
·         The circumference of your waist is a better predictor of heart disease risk than your body mass index.
·         Belly fat, and not the fat on the thighs or bottom, poses the most danger to your heart and arteries.
·         Research shows that for women the risk begins to rise with a waist circumference of more than 32 inches.
·         More than 35 inches is a serious threat.
·         For men, it is 37 inches and 40 inches respectively.

11. Prefer tea over coffee
·         Black tea usually has far less caffeine than coffee, while green tea is also packed with heart-healthy antioxidants.
·         Coffee acts a bit like rocket fuel, kick-starting the adrenal glands and triggering the release of the stress hormone cortisol.
·         It is not the best start to the day.
